BULGARIA CLOSER TO ERM II AFTER IMF MISSION Print E-mail

Bulgaria Finance Minister, Simeon Djankov, has stated that the fact that Bulgaria’s own forecasts coincide with those that the IMF announced Monday is a “great success”.

Djankov and Bulgaria PM Boyko Borisov gave a joint briefing following the IMF announcement. They both agreed that Bulgaria’s chances of entering the ERM II have "increased and become more realistic" after the analysis and findings of the IMF mission.

Officials from the International Monetary Fund (IMF), arrived in Bulgaria on February 18 to examine the country’s readiness to join ERM II, a currency stability test for euro hopefuls.

“We are aiming to comply with the international financial institutions, we want to be a model in the World financial family, we want to be the most disciplined, in this way we will clean the image of Bulgaria,” Borisov stated Monday.

He continued by commenting on Bulgaria’s recent talks with the World Bank, IMF, the EU and others; “ ERM II is not just our objective, it is an objective of Bulgaria, because entry there brings stability, authority and discipline.....praise for Bulgaria attracts investors from around the world impressed by a stable state...Populism - spending today and not worrying about tomorrow's generations - our government won't do this.”

Djankov said; "The IMF forecasts completely coincide with ours, which will make it very difficult this year to increase wages or pensions in Bulgaria."

Djankov added that he was pleased that the government prediction of an economic growth of 0,3% in 2010 almost exactly matched the 0,2% prediction from the IMF.

The International Monetary Fund earlier reported that it expects Bulgaria’s budget deficit to stand at 1,8% of gross domestic product this year, which totals nearly BGN 1,2 B.

Deputy Finance Minister, Ana Mihaylova, said that after the meeting with the IMF Bulgaria remains one of the best examples in the EU of financial stability.

  • Scientists uncover 'totally crazy mechanism' behind much genetic diversity

UK scientists have shed new light on a gene that appears to drive much human evolution and genetic diversity. The research, published in the journal Nature Genetics, was led by the University of Leicester's Professor Sir Alec Jeffreys, the father of DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) fingerprinting. The gene is behind what Professor Jeffreys calls a 'totally crazy mechanism' that plays a key role in promoting genetic diversity. According to the researchers, the results should enhance our understanding of the processes that make us genetically unique, but which can also result in genetic diseases when they go wrong. At the heart of the...
  • Increase in human population killed off cave bears

European scientists have discovered that human expansion rather than climate change was the chief reason why cave bears became extinct in Europe around 24,000 years ago. They claim increased competition between humans and bears for land and shelter - in particular for the caves used by the bears for hibernation during the winter months - triggered the decline in cave bear population levels. Conversely, the brown bear has survived until today because it did not depend so heavily on the cave habitat. The findings were published in the journal Molecular Biology and Evolution. To discover why the numbers of...
